The Vitamix 5300 - Just Bought It!

I just got the latest Vitamix 5300.  I'm just starting to use it and I'll provide a more thorough report on it soon!  It's a bit different compared to the 5200 model that I purchased years back.  I'll keep you posted!

Vitamix 5200 Review - A Year Later

It's been close to a year since I last reviewed my Vitamix.

Since then, I've used it for tons of smoothies, making rice milk, blending powdered milk, making soups, and a bunch of other stuff.

The motor is still strong and works as great as it did when I first bought it. No doubt, this is one of the best blenders on the market. It's heavy duty and can crush through ice and other hard items without any issues.

So if you're looking for a blender, check out the Vitamix.

Vita-Mix 5200 Review

A few years ago, my wife had mentioned the Vita-Mix 5200...but I chose to ignore her. I asked myself, "why should I buy some overpriced blender?" That was then. Let me explain what happened to me - why I decided to buy this blender anyways.

What I Thought

I've used several blenders throughout my life. I've also used some food processors and other kitchen gadgets. I discovered 2 things: 1) Not all of these are made the same (duhh...right?) and 2) Just because it's expensive, doesn't mean it actually works any better.

What My Old Blender Didn't Do To Well

Have you ever passed by the blender section and see all of the great models with pictures of a bunch of fruits or vegetables? The first thing that comes to mind are smoothies.

I ended up buying a low/medium-end model (in the $40-something range). I packed it with a bunch of strawberries, a banana, and some water. Since my fruits were frozen, I didn't think I should use ice.

...well, to make a long story short, it took over 5 minutes just to make sure that all of the contents were blended well. Even at that point, there were a few lumps.

Smoothie Machines - Are They Worth It?

A friend of mine got into smoothies because of the great one I made for him. He ended up spending close to $100 on his. It looked pretty cool. It had a spout and a tamper (the stick-like object used to stick inside the blender and shove/mix the contents down into the blades.

Several months later, the motor wasn't as powerful (it was dying) and the spout was leaking.

My Friend Changed My Mind!

A friend of ours actually bought the Vita-Mix several years before we did. She showed us how well it made smoothies. I discovered that the Vita-Mix was like no other blender. It's high speed blade utilizes the power of friction.

...which leads to - "Friction Cooking". Have you ever heard of blender that could cook for you? My friend created a fast concoction (a hearty soup in less than 6 minutes). I was pretty amazed by that.

All of this and more opened my mind to actually buying the blender (actually, it's more than a blender). When my wife reminded me about it, I told myself that I had to buy one ...not just for convenience, but for a healthy diet as well.

Vita-Mix 5200 or a Juicer?

Ever since I started seeing those infomercials on TV for a juicer, I wanted to have one. I did tons of research and Jack Lalanne's Power Juicer caught my eye. So I started to check out some reviews and in this post, I'll let you know what I discovered...and then what led me to the Vita-Mix 5200 blender.

There are 3 things that influenced my decision:

Vita-Mix 5200 Blender - Making The Ultimate Smoothie

I've been making smoothies for many years with my old Oster smoothie. While it was great and lived a long life, it wasn't capable of doing what my new Vitamix blender does.

One of my goals for the new year was to eat more vegetables and fruits. Growing up, I was somewhat of a meat and potatoes kinda guy. I would eat an apple or orange maybe a few days a week...and greens would be a small portion of my meal...and sometimes I would skip a few days of veggies.

In my early 30's I found out that I had high cholesterol. While I'm a pretty thin guy that works out, I still had this health issue. I knew I had to change my lifestyle.

So that's when I decided to make my...

Ultimate Vita Smoothie

In the past, I would just pop in some strawberries and a banana into my old blender. Sometimes I would add some berries and yogurt too.

While that was a delicious and healthy beverage, I decided to turn things up on the green side.

Nowadays, my smoothies have more veggies. At first, I thought that was pretty disgusting. In the past, I would never drink down veggies...even a V8 tomato drink. However, with my new blender, it blends things quite well and it tastes great!

So what is my ultimate smoothie recipe?

  • 1 Cup of Soy Milk
  • 2 Cups of Spinach
  • 1 Cup of Strawberries
  • 1 Banana

* My ah-ha moment: with my new blender, it's so powerful it even breaks up the strawberry seeds.

Adding Some Vita-Variety

Sometimes I'll add some protein powder, a little more soy milk, sometimes some raspberries, sometimes I'll even add a cup of romaine lettuce or even some carrots.

This has been the best smoothie for me from a taste and health perspective. I change it around a little just to have some variety and continue to drink a healthy and great tasting meal.

I hope that you like my healthy smoothie recipe!
